Don't be naughty

Yesterday, we were discussing the verb "to be" in class.

The lecturer used "don't be naughty" as an example to illustrate his point.

Then he asked us the opposite of "don't be naughty". N and I quickly answered, "be naughty".

I have no idea why we said that.

The right answer is "be good".

Last night, I asked the same question to my 7 year old niece and she answered it right.

What's wrong with us? I guess, our brains were digested by the kentucky fried chicken that we had during lunch. LOL.

  1. Surely the opposite of "Don't be naughty" is "Don't be good". In fact "Be naughty" seems fine as the opposite of "Don't be naughty".

"Be good" seems to be the SAME as "Don't be naughty", not its opposite.

  3. I hope it wasn't me who said that Munerah! I agree with David.
Except I don't think that "Be good" is the same as "Don't be naughty". Telling someone not to be naughty asks that they stop being naughty. They might do that, but not necessarily then be actively good, they might just have a temporary break from being naughty, no? So I think it's a 3-way distinction: Being naughty - being neither naughty or good - being good. (?)
